Underwear! 

Learn how to sew your own underwear and never have to buy it again! Join us for this special weekend workshop with the awesomely talented Rebecca Young. A seasoned seamstress and designer working in the realm of custom burlesque costume and performance. In this class, students will learn how to adjust a pattern to fit, and sew underwear to fit their bodies. They will come away with new underwear and a whole new skill set!

This course is two 3-hour sessions. The next sessions are:

Sewing 101


 

Come learn how to sew, and start making your own projects! Join us in the spacious and inspiring new Riyoko Work/Shop and learn the fundamental beginner skills to get on your way to exploring and creating! In this class, students will learn their way around the machine through various projects and gain the foundational sewing skills to translate into future projects for themselves. Students will learn how to read patterns, and how to choose fabrics and patterns right for the projects they are making. They will make a reversible, lined gift bag, pyjama pants, and learn how to hem pants, and sew zippers. The skills of sewing can seem daunting, but with the right instruction, it can be fun and sew much easier than you think! 

This course is three 3-hour sessions. The next sessions are:

Intermediate Sewing

Come continue your sewing journey! Take your skills to the next level by sewing a fun summer skirt with us and build on skills from Sewing 101. In this class students will learn how to sew button holes, enclosed seam allowance, waistbands, different kinds of hem treatments and more pockets! The skills of sewing can seem daunting, but with the right instruction, it can be fun and sew much easier than you think! 

This course is four 3-hour sessions. The next sessions are:

Copy Your Clothes

Do you have that favourite vintage or fast fashion garment that you wish you could have forever, and make in a million colours? Want to recreate it? Come join us in the spacious riyoko studio to learn how to copy a pattern from the garment, sew a test fit, and get the skills to remake all your favourite clothes again and again!

This class is four 3.5-hour sessions. The next session is:

*We believe in supporting small, and local. We also believe in self sustainability through clothing. We hope that this class will provide an avenue away from fast fashion, and a new and inspiring direction towards self reliance and deeper knowledge into the process of making a garment. In that spirit, we will not accept  local or small designer brands garments as samples to remake. We hope you understand!

 

ALTERations

Want to learn about hems, how to sew buttons properly, and how to alter your pants and blouses to fit? We will show you professional tailoring techniques on how to:

  • take in and out your pants and blouses
  • hem your pants and blouses
  • take up or down your sleeves
  • and how to sew your buttons on so they stay on!

This course is three 3-hour session. The next session is:

    Teen Sew 101

    Come learn how to sew and start making your own projects!  In this class, students will learn their way around the machine through various projects and gain the foundational sewing skills to translate into future projects for themselves. Students will learn how to read patterns, and how to choose fabrics and patterns right for the projects they are making. They will make simple and functional projects like pyjama pants, and gift pouches ( to hold all the things)! The skills of sewing can seem daunting, but with the right instruction, it can be fun and sew much easier than you think! 

    This course is three 3-hour sessions. The next sessions is:

    Sunday October 19, 26 & November 2 - 10 am to 1 pm

    (This class is for teens age 12 to 17 years old. Adult classes are 18 years +)

    Stitch Hangout

    Welcome to Stitch Hangout! Like Mend in Public, but at the studio! Bring your mending projects and come hang out with us at the studio! New to mending? Come hang out with us at the studio and learn how! Bring your clothing with holes, sweaters with runs, bring your broken seams, and your worn out socks and make them new to you again!

    * We do have five sewing machines to rent ($10/ session). (Participants must have experience on the sewing machine. Machines must be reserved ahead of time. Please note the rental request)

    * Please bring your own supplies, and if machines are not available, you are welcome to  bring your own!

    * We will also be in studio to answer simple questions and offer advice.


    Patternmaking 101

    Like making your own clothes but have a hard time finding patterns with that perfect fit? Come learn the foundational concepts of pattern making through flat pattern drafting & 3D form alteration, and tailoring. Learn how to take proper measurements, adjust patterns, cut, and sew a muslin. This class teach you the foundational rules and language to go through pattern books to begin creating your own custom patterns, and the skills to adjust and fit patterns to fit you!

    Get on the way to stylizing the clothing you imagine!

    ReFashion

    Come explore how to deconstruct and reconstruct clothing into one-of-a-kind pieces of your own! In this class, students will learn techniques on how to take apart, and put back together clothing* to create new fashion pieces of their own. From appliqué and patches to making a vest from a jacket, the possibilities are whatever one can imagine (within the functionality of construction;))! And with the right instruction, it can be fun and sew much fun to dive into! 

    *A few weeks prior to class students will be contacted by the instructor to get a feel for what your projects are. 

    This course is two 4-hour sessions each. The session dates are:

    Teen Sew Summer Camp

    Come learn how to sew, and start making your own projects! Join us in the spacious and inspiring Riyoko Work/Shop and learn the fundamental beginner skills to get on your way to exploring and creating! Students will learn their way around the machine through various projects and gain the foundational sewing skills to translate into future projects for themselves. Students will learn how to read patterns, how to use choose fabrics and patterns right for the projects they are making, how to embellish and decorate their projects with hand sewing techniques, and time permitting, repair skills, such as hems, and repairing rips and holes in creative ways. They will make simple and functional projects like a drawstring backpack ( to hold all the things) and pajama pants. The skills of sewing can seem daunting, but with the right instruction, it can be fun and sew much easier than you think! 

    This camp runs Monday to Thursday. It is four 5-hour sessions. The camp dates are:

    July 7, 8, 9 & 10 - 10 am to 3 pm

    Come learn how to sew! This class will get kids familiar with the machine, sewing basic stitches, both machine, and hand stitches (including sewing buttons) by sewing beginner projects all in the name of fun and creativity! Students will learn their way around the machine through various projects and gain the foundational sewing skills to take into future projects for themselves. They will  learn how to read patterns, and how to choose fabrics and patterns right for the projects they are making. They will make simple and functional projects like pyjama pants, and a drawstring bag ( to hold all the things)! The skills of sewing can seem daunting, but with the right instruction, it can be fun and sew much easier than you think! 

    This camp runs Monday to Thursday. It is four 5-hour sessions. The camp dates are:

    July 21, 22, 23 & 24 - 10 am to 3 pm

    All About Sleeves 

    All About Sleeves is a great follow-up to Pattern Making 101 offering skills to achieve that beautifully tailored garment. Topics of discussion will include:

    1) proper measuring of the arm and how to alter the pattern accordingly  

    2) how to calculate sleeve cap ease  

    3) what to do with those elbow darts!  and

    4) common and popular sleeve designs

    Working hands-on, students will develop their own reference pattern making notes and pattern drafts. This course will be jam packed with serious skills.

    Darts! Workshop

    Start shaping your me-made garments into something even more fabulous! Through dart manipulation - the technique of shifting darts in a garment to create new designs- learn how to start making the clothes you imagine. In this class, we will learn to create multiple darts, tucks, pleats, gathers and flares through pattern drafting and muslin samples. Explore how to take your foundational skills to the next level through darts!

    Skirt Basics

    This is a perfect segway class for beginners to learn the foundational skills of pattern making before Pattern Making 101. It's also a great companion to Pattern Making 101 to complete your full body foundational block set. Take your skirt pattern skills to the next level! Learn the basic fitting techniques to make your skirt patterns fit you and give it a little splash of style - In this class we will draft waistbands, circle skirts, a-line skirts, and flare skirts and make test fits to custom fit you!
