Pattern Making 101

Like making your own clothes but have a hard time finding interesting patterns? Want to know how to get that perfect fit? Come learn the foundational concepts of pattern making through flat pattern drafting & 3D form alteration, and tailoring. Learn how to take proper measurements, adjust patterns, cut,  in vestigate fit, and sew a muslin to create a custom pattern. Get on the way to stylizing the clothing you imagine!

All About Sleeves

 

All About Sleeves is a great follow-up to Pattern Making 101 offering skills to achieve that beautifully tailored garment. Topics of discussion will include:

1) proper measuring of the arm and how to alter the pattern accordingly  

2) how to calculate the perfect amount of sleeve cap ease  

3) what to do with those elbow darts!  and

4) common and popular sleeve designs

Working hands-on, students will develop their own reference pattern making notes and pattern drafts.  This course will be jam packed with serious skills.

Remake It!

Do you have that favourite vintage or fast fashion garment that you wish you could have forever, and make in a million colours? Want to recreate it? Come join us in the spacious riyoko studio to learn how to make a pattern, sew a test fit, and get the skills to remake the piece you want to wear time after time.

This class is five 3-hour sessions. The next session is:

*We believe in supporting small, and local. We also believe in self sustainability through clothing. We hope that this class will provide an avenue away from fast fashion, and a new and inspiring direction towards self reliance and deeper knowledge into the process of making a garment. In that spirit, we will not accept  local or small designer brands garments as samples to remake. We hope you understand!

 

Open Studio

Welcome to Open Studio! Need a bit more room to spread out your projects? Or just want company? Come work on your patternmaking and sewing projects in the beautiful Riyoko Work/Shop studio for an afternoon. Maybe you have projects that you have questions on? Get to know other participants and chat sewing and construction! Bring a couple friends and a have a little fun getting creative!

This course is one 5-hour session. The next session is:

Saturday April 6 - 10 am to 3 pm

and/or

Saturday May 4 - 10 am to 3 pm

* We do have four sewing machines to rent ($10/ session). They must be reserved ahead of time. Please note the rental request

* Please bring your own supplies, and if machines are not available, please bring your own. 

* We will also be in studio to answer simple questions and offer advice.

* Book in for 5 hours, but come whenever you want in that time.

 

Sewing 101

Come learn how to sew, and start making your own projects! Join us in the spacious and inspiring new Riyoko Work/Shop and learn the fundamental beginner skills to get on your way to exploring and creating! In this class, students will learn their way around the machine through various projects and gain the foundational sewing skills to translate into future projects for themselves. Students will learn how to read patterns, and how to choose fabrics and patterns right for the projects they are making. They will make a reversible, lined gift bag, pyjama pants, and learn how to hem pants, and sew zippers. The skills of sewing can seem daunting, but with the right instruction, it can be fun and sew much easier than you think!

Darts! Workshop

Start shaping your me-made garments into something even more fabulous! Through dart manipulation - the technique of shifting darts in a garment to create new designs- learn how to start making the clothes you imagine. In this class, we will learn to create multiple darts, tucks, pleats, gathers and flares through pattern drafting and muslin samples. Explore how to take your foundational skills to the next level through darts!

This class is four 2.5 hour sessions

Repair Cafe

Want to learn how to hem your pants? Patch those sweater elbows? Sew on a button? Other repairs? Come by! You do it, and we will guide you through it.  Got a machine? Great! Bring it! Don't have one? No problem, we have a few for you to use. We will also have some sewing notions on hand if you aren't sure what you need, but do bring what you think you will need!* At Repair Cafe, we will guide you through how to fix your beloved garments and such. You'll learn a new skill, and your garment will get a renewed life! Drop in any time between 11 am and 5 pm.

How much: $10 ( if you are not able to pay $10, but would still like to participate, please give us an email @ info@riyoko.ca, let us know what you can pay, and we will make it work!)

* items will be looked at by sewist volunteers to see what we can help with, so please bring in items that will fit in the time span, and will allow you to share the table space with other participants. Thanks for your consideration!

 

Teen Sew 101

Just for Teens*! Come learn how to sew, and start making your own projects! Join us in the spacious and inspiring Riyoko Work/Shop and learn the fundamental beginner skills to get on your way to exploring and creating! In this class, students will learn their way around the machine through various projects and gain the foundational sewing skills to translate into future projects for themselves. Students will learn how to read patterns, and how to choose fabrics and patterns right for the projects they are making. They will make simple and functional projects like pyjama pants, and zippered pouches ( to hold all the things)! The skills of sewing can seem daunting, but with the right instruction, it can be fun and sew much easier than you think! For Summer session, students who have taken Teen Sew 101 previously, are welcome to come and bring their new projects to work on and get instruction - let's get creative!

Kids Sew

Get your kids sewing! This class will get them familiar with the machine, sewing basic stitches, both machine, and hand stitches (including sewing buttons) by sewing small simple projects all in the name of fun and creativity! This class is for ages 6 to 11. This is a 2 hour introductory class.

Skirt Basics

This is a perfect segway class for beginners to learn the foundational skills of pattern making before Pattern Making 101. It's also a great companion to Pattern Making 101 to complete your full body foundational block set. Take your skirt pattern skills to the next level! Learn the basic fitting techniques to make your skirt patterns fit you and give it a little splash of style - In this class we will draft waistbands, circle skirts, a-line skirts, and flare skirts and make test fits to custom fit you!
